SUMMARY:Remembered: the Life of Lucy Higgs Nichols
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Arts Center is pleased to showcase Remembered: the Life of Lucy Higgs Nichols\, the latest addition to the award-winning permanent exhibit Ordinary People\, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad. \nThe exhibit guides visitors through Lucy’s life\, from 1838 — 1915. Period documents and letters detail her life as a slave in Tennessee\, a nurse during the Civil War\, and her post-war life in freedom. It highlights her six year battle for a nurse’s pension\, which was ultimately awarded through a Special Act of Congress. Visitors can explore maps that pinpoint the paths she took and examine actual artifacts from the Civil War\, including an Enfield rifle and an amputation saw of the same type used by the surgeons Lucy served with in the 23rd Indiana Volunteers.

SUMMARY:Ordinary People\, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Ordinary People\, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad draws the national phenomenon of the Underground Railroad into sharp focus by revealing the contributions of ordinary people\, both free and enslaved\, whose courageous acts on both sides of the Ohio River helped overthrow the institution of slavery. For two and a half centuries\, slavery was a blight on our nation’s psyche. Through it all\, more and more ordinary people acted in the face of human tragedy—and changed America forever. \nThis unique exhibit explores the lives of real people\, both free and enslaved\, whose selfless acts of courage helped fugitive slaves find hope and freedom. Based on the book The Underground Railroad in Floyd County\, Indiana by Pam Peters\, this powerful story is woven through actual newspaper accounts\, artifacts\, and revealing illustrations and photographs into a rich experience highlighted by a dramatic\, interactive feature-length multimedia film. At the heart of the exhibit are the actual New Albany residents—black and white\, young and old\, rich and poor—who were able to accomplish so much in the face of such great risk. \nAfter exploring the wealth of information the exhibit has to offer\, individuals enter a small theater where they may view the multimedia film. Via a touch screen computer\, visitors can select to watch the entire program or shorter segments. \n \nMeet Jacob Cummings\, one of the main figures from the Cultural Arts Center’s exhibition\, \n“Ordinary People\, Extraordinary Courage: Men and Women of the Underground Railroad.” \nLarger groups can schedule a viewing of the 15-minute version of the film in the Center’s lower level meeting room. A staff member will introduce the program.

SUMMARY:The Printed Bird
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores the history of bird imagery and ornithology through outstanding book plates produced through the fine art of printmaking. Drawing upon works in the collections of the Floyd County Library and the private collections of Raymond Graf and Albertus Gorman this will be a comprehensive survey of the great bird publications and artists like John James Audubon\, Jacques Barraband\, Edward Lear\, and others who helped contribute to what we know about birds. The exhibition begins with the invention of the printing press in the 15th century and continues through the first quarter of the 20th century.

SUMMARY:Mothering Me
DESCRIPTION:Mothering Me is an annual exhibition celebrating artists who are mothers and exploring what it means to create art while navigating motherhood. This year’s exhibition\, hosted by the Cultural Arts Center\, features 60 artists making work throughout Indiana and Kentucky. In 2022\, Marcia Holloway Ross curated the first Mothering Me exhibition to foster community and connection between mothers creating art. \nWhen her second child was well into toddlerhood\, Ross reintroduced a more defined creative practice into her life\, and realized that the parameters in which she could make work had dramatically changed. The impulsivity that had previously fueled her process was now an impracticality in the face of snacks\, nap schedules\, and her own exhaustion. \nShe wondered how others were navigating this territory. “The bonds formed and support shared with other mothers since becoming one myself has buoyed me through times of uncertainty and loneliness\,” says Ross. “I wanted to find that community for my art practice. I was curious how other artists/mothers were balancing both identities and I longed to find a supportive way for us to feel seen in that journey.”

DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	Art History Illustrated\, Decency or Death: Censorship of the Arts in the Baroque\n January 23\n5:30 pm\n –\n7:00 pm\n \nJoin us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series presented by art historian Brenda Edgar. As the Protestant Reformation divided Europe along religious lines\, the Catholic Church faced an unprecedented threat to its power and primacy. In response\, the Council of Trent (1545-1563) instituted sweeping reforms throughout the Church\, including draconian policies related specifically to the arts. \nArt historian Brenda Edgar will discuss how great artists such as Bernini and Caravaggio were held to strict rules when they handled religious commissions. Violation of these rules was enforceable by the Inquisition\, as the painter Veronese found out the hard way. \n Register Online \n\n	Categories:\n Events \n\n	Tags:\n \n	Event \n\n	Cultural Arts Center\n\n201 East Spring Street\n \n New Albany\,\n	IN\n	47150\n	United States\n\n\n	+ Google Map \n\n \n (812) 944-7336 \n \n\n\n\n\n	\n	Add to calendar	\n \n	\n \n\n\n	Google Calendar\n\n\n	iCalendar\n\n\n	Outlook 365\n\n\n	Outlook Live\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Third Saturday Concert Series: Rockin’ the Pops

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: “They Taught Themselves: The Brilliance of Outsider Art”
DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	Lunch and Learn: “They Taught Themselves: The Brilliance of Outsider Art”\n January 28\n12:00 pm\n –\n1:00 pm\n \nJoin us for our first Lunch & Learn of 2025. Alex Huninghake\, Director & Curator of the Outsider Art Museum located at 2510 Portland Avenue in Louisville\, Kentucky will deliver his program\, “They Taught Themselves: The Brilliance of Outsider Art”\, in the Cultural Arts Center’s lower level meeting room. \nIt has been one year since the Outsider Art Museum and Gallery opened for business with an exhibition of the artworks and songs by the late and beloved Louisville outsider artist\, Mark Anthony Mulligan. According to Alex Huninghake\, “The Outsider Art Museum & Gallery is all about celebrating the beauty and value of artists who are often underrepresented in the fine art world and museum/gallery context.” Additionally\, “The goal is to elevate voices that may be marginalized by society and hopefully provide the artists we work with opportunities to sustain their creative practice by selling their work in our gift shop.” \nThe term “outsider artist” was first coined in 1972 by British art critic\, Roger Cardinal. Outsider artists are self-taught individuals who create art outside the boundaries of official culture. Outsider artists often have little to no formal training and may not be a part of the mainstream art world. As a movement\, outsider art is characterized by its raw\, unbridled creativity and unconventional techniques. There is the use of unconventional materials and a focus on personal expression and emotional intensity. The use of repetition and pattern\, obsessive details\, and a sense of heightened connectivity to the universe are also common features. Additionally\, outsider art often incorporates elements of spirituality\, mythology\, and fantasy\, reflecting the artist’s inner world and experiences. \nSign up for this free opportunity to meet Alex Huninghake and to learn more about the fascinating artworks by outsider artists. \n\n	Categories:\n Events \n\n	Tags:\n \n	Event\n Register Online \n\n	Cultural Arts Center\n\n201 East Spring Street\n \n New Albany\,\n	IN\n	47150\n	United States\n\n\n	+ Google Map \n\n \n (812) 944-7336 \n \n\n\n\n\n	\n	Add to calendar	\n \n	\n \n\n\n	Google Calendar\n\n\n	iCalendar\n\n\n	Outlook 365\n\n\n	Outlook Live\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Art History Illustrated\, Decency or Death: Censorship of the Arts in the Baroque

SUMMARY:Jim Snidero Jazz Trio
DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	Jim Snidero Jazz Trio\n March 10\n5:00 pm\n –\n6:30 pm\n \nJoin us at the Cultural Arts Center for a concert by the Jim Snidero Jazz Trio\, featuring Jim Snidero on alto sax\, Peter Washington on bass\, and Jason Tiemann on drums. To mark the 40th anniversary of his debut recording as a bandleader in 1984\, saxophonist Jim Snidero set out to create something special with his 28th album—and his second trio project to date. Fresh off the success of For All We Know (Savant)\, particularly the standout track “Parker’s Mood”\, Snidero felt the time was right to pay tribute to Charlie Parker\, an artist he regards as “the king of the hill.” Ranked among the top five alto saxophonists in Down Beat’s 2024 Critics Poll\, Snidero is more than qualified to honor one of the bebop pioneers with his new release Bird Feathers (Savant). \nFor his 2025 Midwest tour\, Snidero will feature two of the best jazz musicians on the current New York scene. Peter Washington is the most recorded bassist of his generation\, and undoubtedly one of the best in jazz history. Originally from Louisville\, Jason Tiemann has quietly entered the top tier of NY drummers\, working with some of today’s best and brightest jazz musicians. \nReservations are suggested due to limited seating. SUMMARY:Art History Illustrated: Women and Medieval Manuscripts
DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	Art History Illustrated: Women and Medieval Manuscripts\n March 20\n5:30 pm\n –\n7:00 pm\n \nIn the European Middle Ages\, books weren’t just for men. Although the stereotypical medieval scribe is a monk\, nuns also worked in the scriptoria of their convents\, copying and decorating beautiful manuscripts. In addition to meeting women scribes and illuminators\, we’ll consider women as frequent patrons of these hand-made books\, especially in the Gothic period\, when tiny Books of Hours were worn like jewelry. Along the way\, art historian Brenda Edgar will also look at how women were depicted on the folios of these precious volumes. \nJoin us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series\, held the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar\, in collaboration with The Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center. \nImage: Guda\, Self-Portrait\, 12th century\, Frankfurt\, Germany (Univ. SUMMARY:Art History Illustrated: The Creations and Destructions of Sandro Botticelli
DESCRIPTION:« All Events\n \n\n	Art History Illustrated: The Creations and Destructions of Sandro Botticelli\n April 17\n5:30 pm\n –\n7:00 pm\n \nOne of the great geniuses of the early Italian Renaissance\, Botticelli (1445-1510) is best known for his pagan themes: the Birth of Venus and Primavera feature nude goddesses in scenes inspired by Roman mythology. But his later career was dominated by his religious paintings\, as he fell under the spell of the sinister Dominican friar Savonarola. In this talk\, art historian Brenda Edgar will explore the friar’s influence on Botticelli’s surviving body of exquisite works\, which may have been substantially reduced in the very famous public bonfire of 1497 in Florence. \nImage: detail of Sandro Botticelli’s Mystic Nativity\, c. 1500-1501\, National Gallery\, London\, UK. \n Register Online \n\n	Categories:\n Events \n\n	Tags:\n \n	Event \n\n	Cultural Arts Center\n\n201 East Spring Street\n \n New Albany\,\n	IN\n	47150\n	United States\n\n\n	+ Google Map \n\n \n (812) 944-7336 \n \n\n\n\n\n	\n	Add to calendar	\n \n	\n \n\n\n	Google Calendar\n\n\n	iCalendar\n\n\n	Outlook 365\n\n\n	Outlook Live\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Artists Roundtable
