Día de los Muertos: A Community Ofrenda Project

Día de los Muertos: A Community Ofrenda Project

Come celebrate the Day of the Dead by contributing to an Ofrenda created by Diego Bucio at the Cultural Arts Center! Free for all ages.

Diego is known for his beautiful and meaningful ofrendas, including notable installations at Bernheim Forest and the Speed Art Museum.

Participants can learn about the cultural significance of an Ofrenda (an altar or offering) and Dia de los Muertos while learning to make papel picado, paper marigold garlands, and sugar skulls decorations. Community members will also have the opportunity to bring in photographs of lost loved ones and engage in community storytelling.

Day of the Dead is a celebratory holiday to remember and honor the dead that goes back to pre-Hispanic times. The celebration originated in Mexico and has transcended other countries in Latin America.

“Day of the Dead looks then like a reminder that some day we will all die, but not today. Today we dance, drink, eat and celebrate the time we have left in this world with those we love. It is then that our everyday journey – whatever it is-, takes a new meaning and inspires us to commit ourselves to be better humans, by those who left us a legacy of precious values and traditions, and for the future generations that will remember us exactly the way we have lived.”
