Living Impression: Representation and Surface
Living Impression: Representation and Surface is a group exhibition curated by Casey Dressell that features the work of artists Martin Benson, Karen Boone, Valerie Sullivan Fuchs, Emily Sheehan, Julia Coash, Beverly Glasscock, Brian Harper, Elle Hendrickson, Anne Huntington, Celeste Lewis, Mike Ratterman, Cynthia Woolever Molinari, Ray Kleinhelter, Mary Newton, and Lizzie Gulick—contemporary artists whose practices explore abstraction, process, and material as ways of encountering the world. Engaging with land, nature, and the material environment, these artists translate their encounters into gestures, structures, collections, and visual records.
Through diverse processes and methods of collecting, foraging, traversing, documenting, layering, building, and manipulating materials—process becomes a form of observation, and inseparable from representation. While material and surface become a record of experience and physical presence made visible.
Within the exhibition, abstraction becomes a means of looking more deeply into the visible world. The works move between observation and invention, natural and constructed, image and object. They reveal how materials can carry memory and how encounters with the world can become embodied through making.
Living Impression proposes representation as an exchange: the world leaves an impression upon us, while we leave impressions upon the world. Their works offer us new ways of considering our environment—not as something separate from ourselves, but as a shared and continually evolving field of experience, knowledge, and wonder.
Enjoy light refreshments during the opening reception on Thursday, November 5th, and an Artist Talk from 5:00-6:00. Admission is free. No registration is required.
